Firm History:

YUASA AND HARA is one of the leading Law, Patent/Trademark & Accounting firms in Japan. The firm has established a longstanding international reputation on the basis of our comprehensive services of multi disciplinary professionals. It provides their domestic and international clients the legal services, intellectual property protection, and accounting & auditing services. The firm successfully unites the 18 Attorneys-at-law [Bengoshi], 1 Foreign Legal Counsel [Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi], 60 Patent/Trademark Attorneys [Benrishi], and 4 Certified Public Accountants [Kohnin Kaikeishi] including Of Counsels within one firm. The firm traces its root to 1902, when Judge Toyotaro Yuasa, a later Chairman of Osaka Municipal Assembly, was retired from his judgship and established his law office in Osaka. Dr. Kyozo Yuasa, the son of Judge Yuasa, studied at the Middle Temple and became a Barrister in the United Kingdom in 1927 after he joined his father’s law office as an Attorney at Law [Bengoshi] in Japan. Dr. Yuasa commenced his international legal practice after his return to Japan and was also admitted as Patent Attorney [Benrishi] in 1929. He started his ambitious plan combining Law & Patent practice already in late 1920s. In 1947, Dr. Yuasa relocated his law office from Osaka to Tokyo due to his appointment as a legal counsel for the General Headquarters of the Allied Forces occupying Japan at that time. Dr. Yuasa also served later as Vice President of International Association for the Protection of the Industrial Property of Japan (AIPPI/Japan), President of Japan Patent Attorneys Association (JPAA) and the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA). Since then, the firm has steadily expanded into more in International and Intellectual Property practices with growing number of Attorneys-at-law and Patent/Trademark Attorneys. Mr. Yoshikatsu Sakamoto, an Attorney at Law [Bengoshi], joined our firm as a partner and the name of our firm became YUASA & SAKAMOTO LAW AND PATENT OFFICE in 1958. After the firm changed its name to YUASA, SAKAMOTO, KAWAI & IKENAGA including the name of Mr. Mitsuya Ikenaga, a former Director of Patent Trial Department of the Japan Patent Office, it also added Accounting & Auditing service to the firm’s organization in 1965. Judge Masuji Hara, a prominent expert judge in Intellectual Property of the Tokyo District Court and Tokyo High Court, joined the firm as a partner in 1967. After Mr. Sakamoto was appointed to Justice of the Japanese Supreme Court, the firm’s name was changed to YUASA AND HARA in 1972 and has been building on its strong tradition of multi-professional discipline, technical expertise and international vision until now. In 2002, the firm celebrated its centennial anniversary, which is an extraordinary milestone in Japanese legal history. The firm remains at the forefront of Japanese legal, patent/trademark and accounting practice, handling cutting edge issues such as: Business Method Patents, Computer Software Protection, Corporate Transactions & International Investments for Hi-Tech Venture Business, Cross-border transactions of various industries, Cyberspace Transactions, Domain Name Disputes, Merger & Acquisition between foreign investors and Japanese corporation, International Litigation & Alternative Dispute Resolution on the Internet, International Brand Management of internationally known companies, and Patent Protection in Biotechnology, Mechatronics, Computer Sciences & other Advanced Technology.
